‘He’s why we have football here’: Seattle Seahawks salute Paul Allen, add late owner to ‘Ring of Honor’

Patti Hammond — better known around these parts as “Mama Blue” — knows how much Paul Allen meant to the Seattle Seahawks. A diehard fan since the team entered the NFL in 1976, Hammond has been a regular at home games for 43 years. She was at her front row seat again on Thursday before Seattle’s bout against Los Angeles, donning her feathers, necklaces, and blue-and-green glasses. But this time Mama Blue brought along a special item, holding it up with two hands so everyone could see: a photo of her and the late Allen, celebrating together at the Experience Museum… Read More

Paul Allen has been credited with keeping the Seattle Seahawks from leaving the city, and now the late owner and Microsoft co-founder will be honored with a place in the team’s “Ring of Honor.” The Seahawks announced Monday that Allen, who died last year at the age of 65, will become the 12th member of the distinguished group during a ceremony before Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. “The Seahawks and the 12s are part of what makes Seattle such an exciting city and fantastic community, and the community and the fans were at the forefront of Paul’s mind… Read More

The Seattle Seahawks and University of Washington football program both preached the benefits of rugby-style tackling, which leads with the shoulder instead of the… Read More

Q&A with Hannah Storm and Andrea Kramer as they embark on 2nd season calling Amazon’s NFL games

There was a limited amount of time to interview Hannah Storm and Andrea Kramer last week, so I made sure to ask the veteran sports journalists about becoming the first all-female duo to call an entire NFL game; what it’s like doing play-by-play and color commentary for Amazon’s Thursday Night Football streams; and how having a viewership across 200 countries and territories changes the way they describe the live action. But as our chat came to a close, Kramer wasn’t ready to end it. “Hold on, wait a minute — Taylor, it’s GeekWire!” said Kramer. “You have to let us… Read More

Photos: GeekWire community celebrates summer and soccer with big rooftop Sounders Day party

Summer wasn’t quite done putting on a show in Seattle on Wednesday evening, turning the rooftop deck at Qualtrics in Pioneer Square into the perfect place to be for the annual GeekWire Sounders Day tailgate party. Under blue skies, with sweeping views of Elliott Bay and the Seattle skyline, tech geeks and soccer fans once again came together to celebrate and mingle before heading to the Sounders FC match against FC Dallas across the street at CenturyLink Field. Attendees enjoyed beers and other beverages along with plenty of BBQ as the DJ played until sunset. Sounders FC owner Adrian Hanauer… Read More
